Did you know...

…Istanbul is a town where a man got off the ground for the first time ever! Medieval chronicles fixed that there was a certain Ahmed Celebi who constructed wings from thin wood, went up to Galata Tower (61 m. high) and jumped down. Soaring on the wings he hopped Bosporus. However this didn’t bring money to Celebi. He was considered to be a sorcerer and was sent to Algeria.

Fire Brigade Museum in Istanbul

The beauty of Istanbul has always been in its diversity. Including architectural one. The huge marble palaces in the city alternated with tall buildings for the poor, nine and even more storeyed! So it was in the days of Constantinople, and in the days of the Ottoman Empire the construction of wooden buildings in Istanbul had reached unprecedented levels. The main reason for this was the cheapness of wood. But there were minuses of such buildings. The fires, of course. The flames that broke out in a flat of a wooden building could in a few minutes reach half of the city. All this led to the fact in Istanbul appeared one of the first fire departments of the Middle Ages. It was separated in a particular formation, the fire brigade of the city wore uniforms, and they gave special equipment for fire extinguishing. All this you will see with your own eyes here, at the Fire Brigade Museum of Istanbul. Among the exhibits there are the hooks used to pull burning beams out of the houses in the 16 century and the super-modern costumes Turkish firemen wear today. The museum building is located in the premises of the main fire brigade headquarters in Fatih.

The museum is open every day from 9:00 to 17:00, except Sundays and Mondays. Free admission.
