Istanbul concert halls

Main concert halls in Istanbul

Istanbul is not just the center of Europe and Asia, but also the European Capital of Culture 2010. Lots of mass festivals, shows and concerts are held here. Today we will tell you about the main concert halls in Istanbul.

Yedikule Castle

It was a dark place in the time of the Ottoman sultans. It kept the treasury of the empire and its enemies in several towers. The rebels, rebellious nobles, conspirators, defeated sultans and their families... They were all kept or executed directly in Yedikule. Today this place has become one of the most famous concert halls in Istanbul. They held concerts right in its courtyard. A huge stage is located near the castle’s walls, and the audience usually sits on the lawn. Istanbul city administration does not allow high power as not to destroy the castle’s walls because of too loud sound.

St. Irene Church

Today it is called a church, but some time ago it has been a temple - the oldest in Constantinople. It refers to the 4 century BC, although scholars argue that for several centuries before it was occupied by pagans. The Church of St. Irene is the main church in the city until you see the Cathedral of St. Sophia. In the time of the Ottoman Turks they kept the arsenal of the Janissaries in the building. Now there’s a concert hall here. From time to time the building of St. Irene Church hosts concerts of classical orchestras. It is believed that the acoustics here is the best in the world. Thanks to the special architecture, the audibility in the temple allows to hear a whisper. In addition to concerts they make various exhibitions and shows.

Ataturk Center

This is the most promoted concert hall in Istanbul, that’s why it was named in honor of the most admired man in Turkey. Despite this fact, the building isn’t notable for the beauty of external and internal decoration. But the acoustics and spaciousness are at the highest level. Therefore, most theatrical and musical Istanbul performances take place namely here. The June Music Festival in Istanbul - the most important musical event of the country which will be devoted to Chopin this year - is also held here.

Babylon

This concert hall enjoys the increased attention among the progressive part of the musicians of Europe. It is considered the most professional place for live concerts in Istanbul. A little disadvantage is its small spaciousness.

Balans

This hall is located in a trendy club on the pedestrian Istiklal Avenue in Taksim. They often give concerts of electronic music of Turkish and foreign stars. It is the best concert hall in Istanbul for youth groups.
