Istanbul FAQTurkish holidays

Kurban Bayram (Eid al-Adha)

Kurban Bayram - main holiday

This holiday is one of the official holidays in the country that is a rarity with the governments more inclined to islamization, rather than to a secular state. Strictly speaking, there are only two official holidays in Turkey. And one of them is Eid al-Adha. During these festive days (usually four) large cities of Turkey are empty. Everyone who went in search of a job are trying to return home to meet this holiday with their families.

How to celebrate

This religious holiday, which became then interdenominational - it is celebrated by the Christians of Turkey - is divided into few parts. The first is a sacrifice devoted to the events of biblical times. Do you remember the sacrifice of Abraham, who was preparing to slaughter his son at the request of God? The old man had raised his hand, but the Lord saw that Abraham’s faith is firm, took pity and ordered to slaughter a goatling instead. In honor of this event Muslims make the sacrifice of Kurban Bayram. As a rule, they kill the ram. It happens quickly and as painlessly as possible (so that the food was not desecrated nor with blood, nor with the suffering of animal). Early in the morning the Muslims go to the mosque, make a solemn church service and then go to the cemetery. After visiting the graves of relatives they make the sacrifice.

Sacrifice

Slaughtered sheep meat is divided into three equal parts. One is given to the poor, and for many children from poor families Kurban Bayram is the only opportunity to eat plenty of meat. The second part of the sheep is divided between the neighbors and relatives - and, of course, it is impossible to reject such a gift in any case. Oh, and the last third of the meat is prepared immediately. In the evening everyone who sacrificed a sheep makes a celebration and calls everyone who is in need and cannot make a feast at his expense. Many Turks are trying to invite the Muslim preacher this day.

Meat

Contrary to popular belief, they slaughter not only sheep for Kurban Bayram. They sacrifice goats and cows, and it depends mainly on the region. In Istanbul and Anatolia they sacrifice sheep, and in regions close to Armenia - goats. In general, it all depends on what kind of cattle is bred.

Situation in the country

Eid al-Adha is celebrated by everybody, but it is a family holiday. During these days all public institutions, hospitals and schools are closed... So if you are coming to Istanbul for business, it is better to wait and fly later. Well, if you travel like a tourist, then you can go to Turkey!
