Crimea Memorial Church

One of the churches which has preserved its primeval look is the Crimea Memorial Church. It is open for visitors, so you can attend prayer service, watch the religious rite and admire the temple’s grand interior.

This Anglican church was built by the British architect George Edmund Street on a piece of land granted to the Englishmen by Sultan Abdul Mejid in 1858. Its construction lasted for almost 10 years. The stones for the church were brought to Istanbul from Malta.
The church was built in memory of English soldiers who took part in the Crimean War on the side of the Turks. Thus, this church has turned into a historical and architectural monument. Besides all its merits this church can be distinguished from the total mass of architectural structures in Istanbul - it is built in an interesting neo-Gothic style.

Revival of sanctuary

Due to reduction in the number of parishioners, the church was closed in 1971. They’ve conducted restoration works with immigrants from Sri Lanka after twenty years under the leadership of the priest of Anglican Church. After the restoration the church was reopened. Today you can feel the ancient history and religion by visiting one of the divine services.
