Christian heritage of Istanbul

Latin Catholic Church of St Mary Draperis

One of the Catholic holy places in Istanbul which strikes with its history and beauty is the Latin Catholic Church of St Mary Draperis.
It was built in 1678 by Franciscans. In 1831 the building was renovated after a fire that seriously damaged the church. The restoration was led by the Fossati brothers.
The church is located on Istiklal Avenue. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands in the niche over the big iron gate. This statue was given to the church in the XVI century by a rich citizen of Galata, Clara Bratola Draperis. Two of its stained-glass windows depict St. Francis and St. Clare. You will see many tombstones of XVIII-XIX centuries near the church, which commemorate the noble Levantine families, bishops and benefactors.

The church is open daily except Sunday, from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 16:00.
