The history of the holiday

The Day of Republic descends from the memorable date of the proclamation of Turkish republic in 1923. As the result of the corrections, made in the constitution on that unforgettable day, the Ottoman empire was broken up and Turkish republic came instead of it.

The celebrations of the Republic day are often held with a special range and last during all the next day. The beginning of the holiday can be felt all over the country due to a quite new and very special bright atmosphere of holiday, that is on every street of the city that time. The national flags are put up everywhere, schools and governmental institutions proclaim day off, the streets of Turkey are embellished with ceremonial processions, and every school considers its duty to prepare a special celebration program for that day.

The cities and towns are usually noisy and crowded during the day. Parades of schoolchildren and national army walk along the streets. The events of a special solemnity take place at the mausoleum of the founder of Turkish republic – Mustafa Kemal Ataturk . There, at the special ceremonial ground are held the reviews of army, the obligatory imposition of garlands to the mausoleum of the ruler, and the silence minute in his memory. And by evening Turkish cities are lit by the fires of fireworks, and people have fun on the squares and boulevards at the music of famous artists, performing for them in the honor of the celebration.
