One of the most unique districts of one of the most unique cities on Earth is Sultanahmet. So, what is so unique about that? Sultanahmet is the very heart of the old Istanbul. It is that very Constantinople, with all the Byzantine landmarks preserved in it. Magnificent Hippodrome with Egyptian and Greek columns, a huge underground water tank decorated with antique columns in it named Yerebatan, Hagia Sophia being one of the most beautiful temples in the world, and its counterpart - legendary Blue Mosque... All these are Sultanahmet, the ancient district in the centre of Istanbul, the focus of Byzantine, Roman, and Ottoman history. The place from where for thousands of years were grand European and Asian Empires ruled.
District landmarks today remind us of the Imperial magnificence of the past. It itself, however, now deserves its new name - the district of hotels. They virtually swarm here. A distinct advantage of Sultanahmet is the abundance of inexpensive hotels. No huge pompous hotel can be found here simply due to lack of place.
