Did you know...

…Istanbul Cathedral Hagia Sophia is a place where division of Christian religion to Catholic and Orthodox ones happened. Just in this cathedral Apostolicae Sedis Legatus handed to Constantinople Patriarch the missive letter about his excommunication from the Roman Catholic Church. In return Constantinople Patriarch excommunicated the Patriarch of Rome.

Ephesus, the house of Our Lady

It is here where the place sacred for any type of Christian is. Mother Mary’s hut. One who is on common grounds with Bible will be surprised, for the woman is believed to have dwelled in Jerusalem. It is true indeed but she departed from the city after her son had been crossed. In fact, she did leave together with her son. Yes, it is so. Remember what crossed Jesus told to his mother pointing to John.

"Here is your son, woman", he told.

"Here is your mother, man", he told to John.

Since then, John looked after Mary till the end and started to travel in Asia Minor until he stopped in Ephesus. They lived here with Mary, on a hilltop just near to the town. Here he wrote "Apocalypse" – a manuscript of ineffable power, anger and rage...

Pilgrims coming up the mount always try to imagine John and Mary arriving at this place the first time. She must have been riding the donkey preoccupied by sad thoughts about her son while John must have been walking by her side murmuring something familiar to him only. "Son of a storm" had been the nickname given to this honest, passionate, and obstinate lad by Jesus. It must have taken them half a day to arrive at their final point while to-day we won’t spend two hours to it. They probably reached the top, watched the marvelous Ephesus view, and sighed in relief. Then, Mary probably went to the little hut hidden in pine trees, whereas he stood still deep in some thought for hours and hours...

The hut was restored. A baptistery where local citizens used to be baptized by John is nearby, empty. Candles are lit in the hut all the time.

Every pilgrim has to taste the water from a nearby spring, while those interested hang paper and cotton pieces on a board to ask for something from Mary.

This is of course a mere fallacy, but people are just like... people. They want a wonder, the sooner the better, while immediate one would be the best. So, our group did the hanging thing, and started to investigate the surroundings...

INFORMATION

Mary (Judeo-Aramaic: ????, Maryam, from Hebrew Miriam, Greek Μαριαμ or Μαρια, in Arabic Maryam), and called since medieval times Madonna (My Lady), resident in Nazareth in Galilee, is known from the New Testament as the mother of Jesus of Nazareth. The New Testament describes her as a young maiden who conceived by the agency of the Holy Spirit whilst she was already the betrothed wife of Joseph of the House of David and awaiting their imminent formal home-taking ceremony (the concluding Jewish wedding rite).

Christians generally maintain that she was a virgin at the point of conception and at least until the birth of Jesus. The Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox Churches and some Protestant denominations also maintain that Mary remained a virgin throughout the rest of her life.

The New Testament recounts her presence at important stages during her son's adult life (e.g., at the Wedding at Cana and at his crucifixion). Also, she was present at communal prayers immediately after Jesus' Ascension.
Narratives of her life are further elaborated in later Christian apocrypha, who give the names of her parents as Joachim and Anne.

Christian churches teach various doctrines concerning Mary, and she is the subject of much veneration. The area of Christian theology concerning her is known as Mariology. The conception of her son Jesus is believed to have been an act of the Holy Spirit, and to fulfill the prophecy of Isaiah that a virgin (or young woman) would bear a son who would be called Immanuel ("God with us"). The Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox Churches venerate her as the Ever-Virgin Mother of God (Theotokos), who was specially favoured by God's grace (Catholics hold that she was conceived without original sin) and who, when her earthly life had been completed, was assumed bodily into Heaven. Some Protestants, including certain Anglicans, Methodists and Lutherans, embrace veneration of Mary and also hold some of these doctrines. Others, especially in the Reformed tradition, question or even condemn the devotional and doctrinal position of Mary in the above traditions. Mary also holds a revered position in Islam.

The Roman Catholic tradition has a well established philosophy for the study and veneration of the Virgin Mary via the field of Mariology with Pontifical schools such as the Marianum specifically devoted to this task.
