The St. Sophia Cathedral (Hagia Sophia)
It’s one of the greatest cathedrals in the world. Now it has the status of a museum. Some time ago St. Sophia Cathedral used to be a mosque. It’s, at the same time, the first big Christian Cathedral in Byzantium, whose building was erected in the 6th century.
The Constantinople Patriarchy
Patriarchy church of St. Gregory, built in the 18th century, has a lot of relics: a cross, made out of the Saint Cross tree; a column, where Jesus was scourged; Patriarchy Throne of John Chrysostom.
The Jesus Savior Cathedral
It’s an ancient church with unique mosaic and fresco, representing Evangelic events.
The Pammakaristos Church
It’s an ancient cathedral with the mosaic of 12th century.
Blachernae
It’s a cathedral of the Saint Blessed Virgin with a miraculous saint spring that cures from diseases.
Balikli
It’s a Greek female Monastery of the Saint Blessed Virgin, where some graves of patriarchy and holy springs are located.
The Bulgarian St. Stephen Church
It’s a Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral made of metal in honor of Archdeacon Stephan. It’s open for visitors.
The Armenian Church
It’s an Armenian Orthodox Church, or the Church of St. Gregory Enlightener. It’s the oldest Armenian Church of Istanbul, which was built in 1431.
The St. Irene Church
Nowadays St. Irene Church is just a room for exhibitions. It was named "The Holy Church of the world" in the 4th century. It’s the oldest Church in Istanbul. Being constructed 740 years ago, St. Irene Church is still open for visitors. It used to be an ammunition depot in times of the Ottoman Empire. Today it’s a place for exhibitions.
The Church of St. Mary of the Mongols
It’s a Greek Orthodox church of Teotokos Panagy Mulitiss, the Church of St. Mary of the Mongols. This Byzantium princess got married with the Mongol khan. When she became a widow, she got back to Constantinople and built the Church.
The Church of Saint Trinity
It’ s pretty new; it was built in Istanbul in 1882. Greek people normally come here for the Orthodox mass.

The Armenian Patriarchy
It was built almost 500 years ago. It’s one of the centers of the Armenian Church. The Church is made of wood.
The Church of Ortakoy Kirkor Lusarovich
It’s an Armenian Catholic Church built in the 19th century.
The Cathedral of Sakizagadji Surp Asdvazazin.
It’s an Armenian Church built in 1866. There are 4 altars in it.
The St. Antoine Church
It’s a Catholic cathedral located at Istiklal Avenue. It was built in 1912. It’s one of the biggest churches in Istanbul.
St. Pierre Cathedral
It’s an old Church; it was relocated from an old building, that became a mosque in a new building in 1841. A part of the Church is basically built in the city walls of Istanbul.
Protestantism
The Crimea Memorial Church
It was built in the 19th century. It’s an Anglican Church. It was built in the honor of soldiers, who died at the Crimea war.
Judaism
The Synagogue Neve Shalom
Neve Shalom means "Oasis of peace" in Jewish. It opened its doors for visitors in 1951. It ’ s famous for its chandelier that weighs 8 tons .
The Italian Synagogue
It was built in 1886 by a group of Italian Jews who lived in Istanbul. The building was modified in 1931.
The Synagogue Etz-Haim
It was build in the middle of the 17th century. It has a tendency towards Jerusalem. It is located in Ortakoy area.
The Synagogue Ahriada
The Synagogue Ahriada is the oldest Synagogue in Istanbul, built in the 15th century. It has the shape of a ship.
Islam
The Fatih Mosque
It was built in times of Mahmud II and re-built in 1954.
The Mustafa Pasha Mosque
It was built in the 17th century and restored later.
The Takkeci Ibrahim Aga Mosque
It was built in times of Sultan Selim II.
The Bayezid Mosque
It’s one of the biggest mosques in Istanbul. It still has some bathhouses in it and a religious school.
The Eyup Mosque
It was built by the grave of the armor-bearer prophet Muhammad who died during assault on Constantinople.
The Dolmabahce Mosque
It’s located by the Palace of Dolmabahce, near the bank of Bosporus. It’s one of the most beautiful mosques in the city.
The Sehzade Mosque
It’s built by the legendary architect Sinan, by the order of Sultan Suleiman in the honor of his son, prince Mahmud.
The Suleymaniye Mosque
It was built in Istanbul by the order of Sultan Suleyman I the Legislator. During the reign of Sultan Suleyman I the Legislator, the Ottoman Empire had the time of its life. It was created by Sinan.
The Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque)
It was built in the beginning of the 17th century by the order of Ahmed the First. It’s decorated with blue colored tile. There is a piece of a Saint gem of Kaab in the Mosque.
