Istanbul gives you a unique opportunity to get a hotel next to "the Coliseum of the East".
Hippodrome Square
in Istanbul exists more than 20 centuries, it belonged to three Empires. They used to have horse racing yet when the city was called Byzantium and was a province of the Rome Empire. Its hippodrome was the second biggest after the Rome hippodrome! Later the Emperors of Byzantium celebrated the victory at this place and stopped the mutinies, little later artists performed at this place and now the Hippodrome is a
big open-air museum, "the Coliseum of the East". What is amazing, there are a lot of
Istanbul hotels nearby Hippodrome Square. Just imagine, living so close to the Coliseum or St. Paul’s Cathedral. This is possible only in Turkey. Enjoy a hot aromatic cup of Turkish tea in your hotel room and remember that...
... not only
sport events were organized at this place. It also used to be the biggest place for debates in Constantinople. All days long, except for the days of racing, people of the city used to discuss here events in a heated debate. They also used to organize gladiators’ fights at this place. What is interesting, the first people who turned the Hippodrome into an open-air museum were Byzantium Emperors themselves. A lot of statues and columns were placed there for the educational purpose of people of the Empire by Emperors’ order.
... the same Egyptian obelisk as in Paris is located here. Istanbul obelisk is the most ancient monument of antique in the city. It’s more than 3 500 years old, but the figures carved in it and signs, look like new. In 390 BC by the order of Byzantium Emperor Theodosius the First the obelisk was taken out of the
saint place Amon in the city of Kanak (Egypt) and brought to Constantinople.
... here is located a monument to the event we all know about from the history lessons in school. Do you remember a chapter that said about constant wars between Greek and Persian warriors? Or the Plateau Battle where Persian warriors were defeated? Every boy remembers that chapter where it said that Greeks collected all the swords of Persian warriors and made a column out of them. So this column is going to be right in front of your eyes if you get a room in the
hotel next to the Hippodrome! This column used to look like three serpent heads and a big golden bowl on those serpents. The bowl was stolen before it even got to Constantinople, and the monument itself appeared to be on the Hippodrome Square.
... the stone column in the very end of the Hippodrome used to be in its center some time ago. It happened because its area reduced, a part of the territory got covered with sand for so many centuries, a part of it was lost during the building. The column was placed in the most honored place. The column was built by the order of Emperor Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus in honor of the grandfather of the Emperor Vasili I of Moscow. The column was covered with original pieces of copper. But in the beginning of the 13th century during the crusader invasion it was stolen. Many years ago boys used to climb the column for a penny.
