Nuruosmaniye Mosque – the light of people of Osman Empire
Nuruosmaniye Mosque, a sample of Turkish architecture in rococo style, is located right next to one of the most known places of Istanbul - Grand Bazaar. The magnificent building of the Mosque is nearby and you can see it from far away. The building is decorated with Arabic characters on the inside. Its name can be translated as "the light of people of Osman Empire". You will definitely see the Mosque when you are at Grand Bazaar. Especially for you we have prepared some tips on how to behave in the mosque and some information about Muslim temples.
It’s not really correct to consider a mosque a holy place. Muslim people consider a holy place just the Mosque in Mecca with the Cab stone. Mosque is just a house for praying. Sometimes it’s also a place to stay, because you can always stay overnight in a mosque. But still it’s not the reason to behave impolite and be loud.
In Istanbul you will hear people singing from the Nurosmaniye Mosque. It’s a call for praying that you can hear 5 times per day at a definite time. A special person called "muedzin" is making it.
You should know that inside of the Mosque a special place called "mihrab" defines a central place in the mosque. It’s a special shelf in the wall, turned to Mecca. On the right from "mihrab" there is "minbar", a special tribune for a priest to read prayers.
You will probably notice that the external look of a visitor of the mosque shouldn’t offend a Muslim person who strongly believes in God. You should wear clean, modest and pretty closed clothing. Basically women should wear clothes that will cover the whole body, except for face, hands and feet. Its color shouldn’t be very bright, it shouldn’t fit tightly. It’s better to hide your hair under kerchief. There are a lot of tourists in Istanbul and of course nobody makes them dress like Muslim people. When entering a mosque you will be given a kerchief that you should put on your shoulders if they are naked. It will work, unless you are wearing a miniskirt and shorts!
You will see that the floor in the mosque is covered with rugs. That’s why you should leave your shoes at the entrance. In big mosques, including Nurosmaniye Mosque, special person will take your shoes and will hand you a token.
It’s not necessary to stand in the corner of the mosque. Visitors of the mosque are free to lie or sit on the floor, eat, sleep, talk with each other. But at the same time somebody can be praying, therefore don’t speak too loudly, and don’t curse.
You can get a room in a nice hotel next to the Grand Bazzar and Nuruosmaniye Mosque.
