Saint Anthony – protector for Catholics in Istanbul

Saint Anthony is considered to be a protestor for Catholics in Istanbul. St. Anthony’s Church is one of the most beautiful churches in Istanbul. It’s situated on Istiklal Avenue, next to the Embassies of Sweden, Holland and Russia. This church was built in new gothic style by the architect Julio Mogeri in the beginning of the 30th century. You will definitely visit it as it’s the most beautiful monument of Istanbul. Therefore, we will tell you more about rules of behavior in a Catholic church...

1

The main difference between a Catholic church and an Orthodox church is that there is no special place for icons in a catholic church. There is a small altar barrier instead of it. There is a central part in Cathedral – altar and a place for divine service and holy gifts – presbytery. You can recognize this place by the burning lamp in front of the place for holy gifts.

2

Remember that men should take their hats off when entering a Catholic church. Women don’t need to wear kerchiefs. There are no special rules regarding clothes or makeup. Though appearing in cathedral in shorts or too open clothes is not recommended. This is just impolite.

3

There is a vessel with holy water at the entrance to a Catholic Cathedral; Catholics put the fingers of the right hand in it and cross themselves. Before entering the Cathedral they lean on the right knee in front of the place for holy gifts. Every time passing by this place they lean their heads or lean on the knees.

4

There is one more difference between Catholic and Orthodox churches, they have benches in Catholic churches. Confession in Catholic church is made in specially created booths for priest and parishioner. If there is someone talking in a booth, you shouldn’t come closer to the priest; it may be a very private talk. One shouldn’t disturb people praying or staying in silence, one should wait until they are done.

5

There are two different levels of communication with a priest: divine service and a normal talk. You can use etiquette rules while having an ordinary talk with a priest.

Catholic priests give a vow of celibacy, that’s why it’s not polite to inquire about marital life of a person. There is one more specific difference – as a rule, the priest is the first one to give a hand, to women as well.

As you see, it’s easy to know how to behave in a Catholic church, remember these simple rules. That’s why you will feel comfortable in St. Anthony’s Cathedral, it’s really interesting. You can get a room in an Istanbul hotel near St. Anthony’s Cathedral and watch the life on Istiklal Avenue.
