New Mosque is a beauty of the Golden Horn

Here are several interesting facts about one of the most beautiful mosques of Istanbul

Yeni Mosque or New Mosque is known not only in Istanbul and to Muslim people but is famous world wide. For Muslim people it’s a holy place, for everyone else in the world it’s a unique cathedral that is worth seeing for its beauty and history. Thousands of pigeons are flying around the Yeni Cami, they eat millet from hand. You can buy some millet right by the Cathedral and feed the birds. It only costs one lira (about 1 dollar) to buy some millet. You will be surrounded by thousands of pigeons! It’s a very special feeling that cannot be compared to anything! It’s like at the Saint Mark Square in Venice!

The New Mosque is worth seeing due to the following reasons.

... it’s one of the most visited mosques in Istanbul. It’s located in the busiest area of the city. That’s why you will always find crowds of people by Yeni Mosque, parishioners and tourists who come to have a look at the ancient cathedral. You can have a seat on a bench and look at the water of the Golden Horn; Yeni Mosque is situated on its shore.

... more than half of the century was spent on its building. Sixty six years. The person who initiated building of a Muslim Cathedral was a woman named Bapho, who originated from Venice, Italy. She was a wife of Sultan Selim the Second and mother of Mehmed the Third. She adopted Islam and got a new name Safie.

... Several architects took part in its building. The first of them was Davud Ara who unfortunately died several years after the beginning of construction. Shortly after that, financing of construction stopped and construction of the New Mosque was postponed for about 50 years. Architects Dalich Ahmed, Casim Aga and Mustafa Aga were the ones to finish its building.

... One more Sultan helped tremendously to finish the building of the Yeni Cami – a woman, mother of Mehmed the Fourth. As you see, women contributed a lot in the building of this beautiful Cathedral. Her name was Turhan and she talked her son into giving more money to finish the building of the Mosque.

... the Mosque is beautifully decorated inside. Faience used for decoration was highly glazed. It makes a difference in comparison with some other Mosques in the world.

... There are five gates in this Muslim Cathedral, one of them leads to the front yard of the Mosque. There is "avlu" in the center of the building, it’s a square in front of the mosque with some fountains for religious ceremonies. There is a gallery with portico around it. There are 24 domes above it.

... there are two side elevations at the New Mosque. You can see two minarets with three balconies from the side of the inner yard. There is a Hunkar’s castle right next to Yeni Mosque. It’s connected to the Mosque with an arch.

As you can see, the Yeni Cami is definitely worth seeing. You can even get a room in a hotel close to the New Mosque. It’s in Sultanahmet area, a historical center of the city.
