Here are some interesting facts about one of the most known fortresses of Istanbul
Rumeli Fortress - Istanbul gates
This fortress was built in order for Constantinople to be ruined. Sultan Mehmed Fatih ordered to build this fortress in order to block the ways for bringing the food in the attacked city. He did it following sultan Bayazid who built another fortress, the Anatolian Fortress, in the end of the 14th century. Two fortresses blocked all the ways into the city from the sea, and troops of Mehmed Fatih blocked the ways on land. That’s how Constantinople was ruined.
It’s known from the documentary that more than 1000 masters and more than 2000 workers were involved in building of the fortress. An unbelievable amount in those times! They fulfilled the task the sultan gave them for two months, that is also a record. It’s hard to believe looking at Rumeli Fortress that this huge, grand building was built in just a couple of months.
There are several towers in the Rumeli Fortress. One of them is Halip Pasha Tower on the seaside; it has a 12-cornered form. The tower on the right is Sarudja Pasha Tower; it has 24 meters in diameter; it’s 57 meters high. The tower on the left is called Zaganos Pasha Tower, it’s height above the sea is 57 meters.
The Museum of Artillery and Summer Theater for summer concerts were opened inside the fortress in 1953, during the 500th City anniversary celebration. They were opened after restoration.
It’s known that the narrow space between the Rumeli fortress and Anatolian Fortress was called "cut throat". It was absolutely impossible to get through two fortresses. In Rumeli-Hisari there was a whole army of janissary who shot their giant cannons along the seaside and any sailing of foreign ships in Bosporus was prohibited. There is a sad historic fact that the only Venetian ship that tried to get in the city was drown and the sailors who survived were executed. After that no one ever tried to break through and the fall of Constantinople was about time. Later the fortress was used as a prison.
The project of the building is known in the world of architects for the fact that in a very short time the constructors were able to build it on a very hilly surface.
You can get a room in a hotel next to the Rumeli Fortress.
