Suleymaniye - a beautiful mosque
The greatest Sultan of Ottoman Empire is buried next to Suleymaniye Mosque
Suleymaniye Mosque is one of the greatest mosques of Istanbul and whole Islamic world. It was built by order of Sultan Suleyman the Legislator (the Greatest as he was called), and impresses millions of people around the world. Staying at Istanbul hotels close to Suleymaniye Mosque, looking at its walls and standing under its great roof, you will find out that...
...the greatest architect Sinan built this mosque. When he was a little boy, chosen for service in troops of Sultan’s army, Sinan, who was of Greek origin, showed himself as an excellent engineer and worker. Emperors made him an architect since he was destined to build, not to ruin. Suleymaniye Mosque is one the greatest mosques among his architectural projects.
...here are buried Suleyman the legislator and his wife Hurrem...
...the base of the mosque consists of precious gems. As scientists say Suleyman got a box with precious gems from Persian shah. It was a hint that Ottoman Empire didn’t have enough money to build a mosque. The angry Sultan ordered to throw gems in the base of the building during the construction process.
...legendary master Hasan Celebi carved on the boards in the mosque the names of great people of Islam religion and poems from Karan. To make the boards they used a black paint that they got from burning candles in the mosque. They were blowing air inside of the building so that the smoke would go on a special board. Later they took the paint off the board.
...the cemetery behind the museum is an open-air museum now. Many royal representatives from Istanbul are buried there.
...the real name of Sultan’s wife Hurrem, buried here, is Roxolana. She was of Ukrainian origin and was stolen during invasion times and sold in Istanbul. Roxolana’s story looks like a fairy tale, she seduced the sultan and became his faithful and beloved wife.
...in the garden near the Suleymaniye Mosque there are two mausoleums of Suleyman and his beloved wife Roxolana. In Suleyman mausoleum you will see a unique dome painting; Istanbul mosques used to be painted in bright colors like black, red, golden. Nowadays they are in blue, pale colors.
...on both sides of the mosque, southern and northern, there are two big arches supported by two columns of red granite. One of these columns was brought from Ljubljana Cathedral, another one from Alexandria, the third one from Istanbul mosque located nearby and the last column was brought from Topkapi Palace. These columns symbolize the four caliphates of Islam.
It is very prestigious to live in an Istanbul hotel located next to Suleymaniye Mosque.
