Dolmabahce Palace - luxury and prestige
This unique palace appeared in
Istanbul not long ago. It is much younger than the Byzantine stone churches and Ottoman pavilions of wood, but not as majestic as the Topkapi complex and not so gloomy as
Yedikule. But it is the most luxurious, brilliant and richest palace. Therefore, fifty thousand (!) tourists visit Dolmabahce every day. It is always crowdy there...
History
Dolmabahce appeared in 19 century when the Sultans finally denied the traditions of the Ottoman Empire and ceased to be severe rulers. The luxury and bliss of the city on the banks of the Bosphorus had done its work, and the Sultans began to explore the West. There, in Paris, which was considered the most sophisticated capital of Europe, their castle complex of Versailles impressed the whole world. The Sultans could not remain indifferent and began to build in Istanbul the palace in the European style. In fact, it took more than fourty tons (!) of gold to decorate its walls and columns. It is literally packed with jewels, rare furniture, rare musical instruments and porcelain. To this very day you are allowed to enter Dolmabahce only in special shoes in order not to stain the expensive carpet...
Location
The place where Dolmabahce stands is priceless. This is the waterfront of the Bosphorus. Straight from the steps of the palace the Sultans stepped on board of a luxury boat and made a trip along the strait. A few meters from the palace there is a mosque built in the 19 century after the defeat of the insurgent janissary corps. In the same direction there’s a Bulgarian Orthodox Church made of iron. In general, there are many attractions here.
Hotels
As a rule,
Istanbul hotels near the Dolmabahce Palace are small and cozy. Most hotels are
three star, but very prestigious and comfortable. It is close to Taksim (2 minutes by funicular railway), Sultanahmet (5 minutes by tram) and Laleli (10 minutes by tram). Room prices are not very high, but for a three star hotel in Istanbul are still slightly above average. But hotels near Dolmabahce are worthy of it, because they are standing one step away from one of the most prestigious palaces in Istanbul.
