Egyptian Market: Istanbul orient
This is the second largest market in Istanbul. It has been named the Egyptian Bazaar in the days of the Ottoman Empire. In those days, they brought spices and seasonings from Egypt to Istanbul and sold them here. The second name of this bazaar is Spice Market. All traders who sold their goods here gave 10 percent of their revenue for the construction of a mosque in the neighborhood. This is a common practice in the Islamic world. Today Istanbul Egyptian market is surrounded not only by mosques, but also by hotels.
Location
The Egyptian market is located on the waterfront of Eminonu pier. This is opposite the Galata Bridge, on the other side of which rises a majestic 61-meter Galata Tower. Hotels surrounding the Egyptian Bazaar refer to the hotels of Sultanahmet (Sirkeci is its maritime part). Therefore, mostly they are three star and quite inexpensive.
History
You will learn that the Egyptian Bazaar was built in 1660 and was the building sponsor of the New Mosque. Being built in the 17th century, it attracts millions of tourists each year. It is considered one of the most beautiful mosques of Istanbul.
What they sell
Even today you can buy here all sorts of spices and herbs brought not only from Egypt, but from all over the world. By the way, at the bazaar stalls you can buy ready-made bags of spices, as well as spices by weight.
Food
In addition to spices, you can also buy different food. For example, the Armenian bastourma (meat cooked on the technology similar to fat cooking), famous Anatolian cheeses, jams, Turkish Delight (rahat lokum), sponges made of natural fibers, delicacies made from dried fruits, perfumes in miniature bottles... You should definitely haggle here.
Sights
Besides the Egyptian market there are the New Mosque, Flower and Bird Markets. In addition there is Eminonu pier, from where depart boats offering cruises along the Bosphorus. They are ships or boats for five or six people. Near the market there is an underground passage, where they sell high-quality and cheap clothes from Turkish manufacturers.
