Galata’s hotels: a little Europe in the heart of Asia
Galata Tower appeared in Istanbul many centuries ago. Being built with the money of the Genoese and Venetian Diasporas, it served to protect the city. In fact, it was the first medieval skyscraper. From a height of 61 meters one could see the enemy ships long before they appear in the water of the Bosporus or Golden Horn. Eventually, the tower was to serve exclusively for peaceful purposes... Now it is surrounded by a huge number of hotels. It is always full of tourists, who are waiting for their turn to rise on high-speed noiseless elevators above the city on the bird’s-eye view... Living next door to Galata is like staying near the Eiffel Tower or renting a house near the Tower. In general, it means to live close to history. Well, Istanbul hotels next to Galata Tower have many other advantages...
Location
Let’s remember where exactly Galata Tower is located. This is the part of Istanbul, which is adjacent to the sea. There’s a big bridge connecting the banks of the Bosphorus, called the Galata Bridge. Almost at the bottom of the tower, just beneath the bridge, there’s a famous fish market. Here, day and night, you can buy fresh fish caught from the Bosphorus. This is a low-cost market, and, incidentally, you can easily buy a flounder or shrimps and ask the hotel chef to cook it for you. They will always meet your wishes.
Hotels
Most hotels in Pera and Galata are 3 or 4 star. Of course there are luxurious five star hotels, but they are few, because such hotels need a large adjoining area. In Istanbul, where every square meter of land is worth one’s weight in gold, it is a big problem. Therefore many hotels cost like 4 star hotels, though their comfort and service is like at a five star hotel. With this you can have a good save, when choosing a hotel in this district.
Transport
Of course, no matter what district of Istanbul you choose, you still have to go elsewhere, even if just out of curiosity. In this sense, a place near Galata Bridge is optimal. It is close to Sultanahmet (go across the bridge, that’s all). There’s only one stop by tram to Taksim (entertainment center). There are tram stops right at the Tower. Finally, it offers stunning views of the sea.
Sightseeing
It would be a mistake to assume that there are no attractions in this area, but the Galata Tower. There is famous fish market, Tophane Armory and famous Pera Palace hotel of the 19th century... History of Istanbul is everywhere.
