Eyup - armor-bearer of prophet

Here are five most amazing facts about Eyup Mosque in Istanbul

This Mosque of the city isn’t the biggest and most ancient. It doesn’t strike your imagination with its size. But you can see a lot of people by the Mosque every day. They came here to see the Mosque of the armor-bearer of prophet Muhammed Eyup. It’s very symbolic, Muhammed used to be an armor-bearer in his youth before he settled Islam... We are going to share with you the most interesting facts about Eyup Mosque.

1

Armor-bearer of prophet fell by the walls of the city, which used to be called Constantinople, a long time ago. It happened yet in year 677 when troops of Arabs came to Byzantium and Europe looking to conquer the world. Only Carl the Great managed to stop the troops of Arabs in Europe. In Byzantium Arabs ran into Constantinople. That time the city wasn’t ruined though there was a long-term attack. But a lot of its defenders were killed, including people who attacked the city. One of them was the armor-bearer of prophet Eyup Ansari. This Mosque was built in his honor, but it happened later. Then, in year 674, the warrior fell unconscious and his body was left in the city of Constantinople...

2

When Turks-Osman arrived in Constantinople to conquer it, they changed its name for Istanbul. Muslim warriors didn’t forget the fallen troops. Even those who were killed many centuries before they were born. In the 15th century, by the order of Mehmed Fatih the Mosque was built on the place where in the 7th century armor-bearer of prophet was killed.

3

Cupa Mosque that we see today... doesn’t have anything to do with the Cupa Mosque that Sultan Fatih built. It was totally ruined by the earthquake in 1766. There was nothing left but the holy place, important to Muslim. Then on its place they built a copy of the old Mosque of armor-bearer of prophet in year 1800. Sultan Salim the Third ordered to start its building.

4

Architectural features of this mosque include its model of a square form with a dome in the center. Eight hemispheres are located around the dome.

5

There is "turbe" right next to the Mosque, a place of bury of the armor-bearer. It is finely done in green color. There is an epitaph to Eyup on the "turbe". Many other priests, councilors, admirals, pashas were buried nearby.

You can get a room in a nice hotel next to Eyup Mosque.
