There are places
in Istanbul that are filled with energy. Dozens of centuries, hundreds of people, many civilizations. The energy didn’t just disappear; it is spread in Istanbul, so that simple tourists could feel what Time and History exist. One of such unique places is Cemberlitas Square. Its story started long ago, 2 thousand years ago, and ever since then it just becomes richer and accumulates symbols, images, people, era…
Cemberlitas Square started with an ancient forum of the legendary Emperor Constantine. It’s known that it was situated here. But unfortunately of all constructions of forum only Constantine column remained the same. It’s called Cemberlitash, therefore the name of the square. It is dated year 330. The column looks very old..
Many years ago Constantine column served as a place for Emperor’s statue. It’s 35 meters high. The statue was seen from
the sea. Sailors of ships in the sea could see it coming closer to Constantinople and it was the Empire’s symbol that frightened barbarian people. But in year 1106, the statue was ruined by a hurricane. Present name "Cemberlitas" which means "girded column" was given due to the fact that is was girded with metallic circles for support of the column. This column was exposed to a lot of fires. But Istanbul pigeons like it a lot.
There is a big arch on the square. It’s an entrance in Vezir Han, a huge shed of the 17
th century. It is still a
trade center. A building with a dome in Divan-Iolu is
a bathhouse of Cemberlitash, Cemberlitas Hamami, built yet in the end of the 16
th century. The building was renewed many times, but there is still ancient marble decoration inside.
Cemberlitas is like big gates for
Grand Bazaar. It’s a huge covered market, real paradise
for shopaholics. There are more than a dozen of different streets inside: Golden Jewelry Avenue, Fur Street, Dishes Street and more. You can wander there the whole day and buy whatever you wish. Just don’t forget to bargain. After the Grand Bazaar, be back to Cemberlitas and breathe the air of history.
