Yedikule – sultans’ evil secrets...

Sultan’s life was not only about feasts and masked balls, beautiful girls in gorgeous gardens of Istanbul and lots of gold and jewelry on guards. Sultan’s life was also about conquering of the world. And secrets. Secrets of successors to the throne, secrets of fighting for the power that no one was aware about but the rulers. Though there was someone who did know everything about sultan’s secrets. These were the walls of the gloomy Yedicule Castle. The places where sultans who lost the fight were killed. We do know something about secrets as well. We are going to share it with you...

There still exist some rooms in Yedikule Castle where it’s not possible to get in from the hallway. But you will be able to see what’s going on there through special holes. They assume that that’s where princes and their relatives were kept before they were executed for losing the fight for the throne. Terrifying executions were made in these rooms, condemned were not even allowed to die under open sky...

Yedikule is a castle with seven towers. It didn’t fully stay as it was until today. Two towers of the castle that defended yet Constantinople were ruined by Turks-Osman during the attack.

In Byzantium times, here used to be the gates where grand Kyiv dukes punched their shields signifying glorious victory above Constantinople. According to the legend, the conqueror of the city should go through these gates in the city. That’s why the sultans who conquered Istanbul ordered to cover the gates with brick.

There still exists the Torture Tower in Yedikule. It’s a very terrifying place, it makes the blood run cold... Just like 200 years ago, the walls of the dark tower are all covered with last writings of condemned. Here in tiny wooden cages they were waiting for their torturers. Rooms for condemned are still the same as they were many years ago. The tools for torturing are also still the same and a part of them is in the yard and another part is the museum of tortures by the Castle.

In the times of sultans treasure was kept in one of the towers of castle. A huge stone shaft was filled with gold and precious gems to the top during the attack on Istanbul by enemy’s troops. The height of the tower is more than 20 meters!

Sometimes there were more than several hundreds of condemned in the castle, but there were just 50 guards and 20 officers in Yedicule castle. It’s a matter of Eastern fatalism. In Osman Empire it was common to accept life events as the destiny...

We have the possibility to offer you some hotels situated close to Yedikue, and Lalei district is not far away from Yedikule.
