A majority of hotels in Istanbul are located next to the main sightseeing places
Every person who visits Istanbul with the purpose of sightseeing, taking excursions and discovering ancient legends is better to stay next to the historic center. Sure, there you can find the biggest number of historic monuments, the oldest in Europe! That’s why it’s wise to get a hotel in Sultanahmet district if you are looking for sightseeing in Istanbul. Istanbul hotels next to historic sights give you the opportunity to live close to the sightseeing places of Istanbul. Here are the most important of them.
The Santa Sophia Cathedral
It’s an ancient cathedral, one of the biggest in the world, located in the historic center of Istanbul. It’s the heart of Istanbul. They started building the Santa Sophia Cathedral yet in the Byzantium Empire times and finished building by the 7th century. Some time later Ottoman conquerors turned it into a mosque. Nowadays it’s a museum, there is no prayer service anymore, but this Cathedral is older than any other cathedrals in London or Rome, though it’s not so big.
The Blue Mosque
It’s one of the biggest mosques in the world. It’s covered with 200 000 blue tiles inside, that’s why it has a name - the Blue Mosque. There is a unique relic in the mosque – a piece of Kaab, the holy stone for Muslim. The Blue Mosque or Sultanahmet Mosque is huge and it impresses. It’s situated right opposite the Santa Sophia Cathedral.
Hippodromme Square
Hippodromme Square was the most ancient museum of Constantinople, the Constantinople circus, a place for political debates. A lot of people from the entire Rome Empire used to come here to see a coachman contest. Right in this place, the 2nd biggest race track in Empire, they used to have sculptures and monuments of the world: Egyptian columns, Greek sculptures. You still can see some things left from those times. If you are going to stay in a hotel next to this location, you will see it from the windows of your hotel room.
Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnici)
It’s an amazing construction, there is nothing like that in the whole world. It’s an ancient cathedral with Ellyn columns. It was built before Christian era. Byzantium people turned it into a church. Later it went down in the earth and Ottoman people made a reservoir out of it. Nowadays it’s dark in here, water is dripping from the ceiling and 100-year old carps are swimming in water between the columns.
Topkapi Palace
It’s been a residence of Ottoman sultans for 400 years. Topkapi Palace is still a luxurious place. There is everything in here: Japanese china dated the beginning of the millennium, two-meter long swords with two handles that belonged to crusaders who conquered Constantinople.
Living in Sultanahment district is like living in a museum. Each Istanbul hotel located next to the sightseeing places gives you this opportunity.
