Why the Golden Horn is golden?
There are three opinions on how the Golden Horn obtained its name. The first is that during sunsets, its waters glisten like gold. The second is that the chains crossing the bay to prevent enemy ships from entering used to glisten like golden. The third is that Io transformed into a cow, fleeing from Zeus jealous wife made a row with her horn. The row was immediately filled with water. Cow’s horn hence resulted in the Golden Horn. It does glisten, as you can see.
How the Golden Horn was about to disappear, one day
When looked at from short distance, this bay looks just like a cosy lake with playing grounds and benches on its shores. Its water is crystal clear. Things were very different, 20 years ago. The Golden Horn was extremely polluted with waste waters from nearby factories. Respect Turks for they understood that tourism could bring more money than industry, and cleaned the bay immediately. Private boats are parked just by the shores of this legendary gulf. Wild ducks dwell right here, in the middle of metropolis...
Flags over the Bosphorous
Almost everything in Turkey is private property. Bosphorous boat tours, bringing good profits, are arranged by private businessmen as well. Any tourists can rent a tiny boat or a luxurious yacht provided he has enough money. You can also arrange a picnic in the middle of Bosphorus; they will make a barbecue for you without any problem. Behold the Turkish flags on boats. Almost all the boats have these. It is not obligatory at all. The point is that Turks are very passionate patriots.
